The Neurointerventionalists at the Mission Health Spine Center specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and management of vertebral compression fractures.

What are vertebral compression fractures?

Vertebral compression fractures occur when the bones in your spine collapse and may arise in patients suffering from osteoporosis, a bone disease that results in decreased bone density and increased risk of fractures. The bone structure may become thin if either too much tissue has been lost or not enough bone tissue has been made, causing the bones to fracture. If left untreated, vertebral compression fractures can result in height loss and severe back pain, decreasing mobility and making once-daily activities difficult.

The Neurointerventionalists at the Mission Spine Center partner alongside imaging specialists, primary care, emergency, neurosurgical and orthopedic specialists to identify patients with vertebral compression fractures and if appropriate, initiate timely treatments in order to reduce pain and help prevent further collapse of the vertebra.

• Verebroplasty/Vertebral Augmentation: This is a minimally invasive procedure in which the Neurointerventionalist guides a needle into the fractured vertebrae using X-ray guidance, and then injects a cement-like substance to stabilize the fracture. Most patients are able to go home on the same day as their surgery.
