Shoulder Care

The shoulder is one of the most flexible joints in the human body, allowing you to rotate and move your arm. It contains a complex network of muscles, bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments, allowing you to perform daily activities such as carrying groceries, as well as recreational activities such as swimming or throwing a ball. Your shoulder can be susceptible to a wide variety of conditions that cause pain and decreased range of motion, including arthritis, bone fractures or tendon injuries, such as a torn rotator cuff. If you have an acute injury, overuse injury or are suffering from joint pain of the shoulder, the orthopedic specialists at Mission Health Orthopedics have the specialized training and expertise to reduce your pain and restore your quality of life. Our primary care sports medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons personalize care based on your specific needs to diagnose, treat and manage all shoulder injuries, working alongside rehabilitation specialists to help restore strength and function. Our shoulder specialists offer convenient locations throughout western North Carolina in the Asheville, Franklin, Brevard, Marion and Spruce Pine communities to ensure excellent care is never far away.

We offer care for a wide variety of shoulder conditions, including:

  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Bursitis
  • Separated shoulder
  • Shoulder instability
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Labral tears and bicep tendon injuries

Comprehensive Shoulder Fracture Care

Shoulder fractures can result from a fall or sudden impact, causing pain, limited range of motion and difficulty performing everyday tasks. If you have a broken bone of the shoulder, we offer conservative and surgical treatments to help ensure the fracture heals properly and does not result in future complications.

We treat all fractures of the shoulder, including:

  • Scapula fracture
  • Clavicle fracture
  • Proximal humerus fracture

Arthritis and Chronic Joint Pain of the Shoulder

If you are suffering from chronic joint pain or arthritis of the shoulder, the experienced team of orthopedic surgeons at Mission Health offers comprehensive, personalized care to reduce your pain and return you to a high functional level. We use nonsurgical methods first to help relieve pain and stiffness, including steroid injections, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. If your pain persists after conservative treatment, our orthopedic specialists offer surgical options, which may help eliminate pain and restore strength, function and return you to an active lifestyle. At Mission Health Orthopedics, our orthopedic surgeons perform more total shoulder replacements than any other hospital in western North Carolina.

Total Shoulder Replacement: Total shoulder replacement is a procedure in which the damaged cartilage and bone of the shoulder is replaced with a prosthesis. It may result in pain relief and a more natural range of movement, and may allow patients to return to daily activities, light labor and sporting activities such as yoga, swimming and golf. At Mission Health Orthopedics, our expertise in shoulder replacement ensures patients achieve the best possible outcomes.

Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement: Reverse total shoulder replacement is a new procedure used to replace the damaged tissue of the shoulder and is typically performed if patients have undergone previously failed shoulder surgeries or have significant rotator cuff tears. In this procedure, the deltoid (shoulder) muscle is used to stabilize the joint rather than the rotator cuff. Patients may experience greatly reduced pain and increased movement, and may return to daily activities and an active lifestyle.

Your doctor will discuss each of your treatment options with you, and will select the best procedure based on your specific needs.
