Therapy Programs

Mission Health's Mental and Behavioral Health Programs are tailored to meet the individual needs of our patients. We are unique in that we have resources for the entire lifespan of a patient’s care, from emergencies and acute inpatient care to preventative and stabilizing outpatient care.

Mission Behavioral Health Outpatient Programs

Our hospital-based outpatient programs are tailored to meet the individual needs of adults and seniors who need support as a way to prevent the need for hospitalization or as a step-down option after an inpatient stay. These programs are a more intensive and flexible alternative to traditional community-based outpatient therapy. We accept referrals from any healthcare professional and in most cases, self-referrals. Our clinical staff offers confidential assessments to help determine which service is right for you. Please call 828-213-4696  for more information or to schedule your assessment today.

Each program focuses on enhancing a person’s skills and resources to help build self-confidence and self-reliance, and may include assistance with the following:

  • life transitions
  • assertiveness skills
  • managing stress
  • depression, grief and loss
  • mood disorders
  • anger management
  • negative thinking
  • trauma
  • medication education
  • hopelessness
  • anxiety
  • mindfulness
  • relationships

Most of our therapy sessions are conducted in a group format, although individual and family therapy are provided if clinically indicated. Licensed and trained therapists, under the supervision of board-certified psychiatrists, facilitate group therapies. Our psychiatrist may provide medication management and consult with your primary care or psychiatric provider.

Electroconvulsive Therapy

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective way to treat behavioral health disorders, including:

  • bipolar disorders
  • schizophrenia
  • severe depression

ECT is one of the most effective therapies available, with remission rates up to 80 percent. Individuals who have sought treatment for depression, tried at least two medications and have not received any benefit from those medications may benefit from ECT.

The Mission Behavioral Health ECT program can treat patients while hospitalized for a psychiatric event or as a form of outpatient treatment. ECT procedures are conducted in the new state-of-the-art Mission Hospital North Tower Outpatient Procedure area. ECT is an often misunderstood or even feared form of mental health treatment. Mission has a modern approach to ECT with a highly trained medical team using the latest equipment and approaches to reduce discomfort and side effects such as memory problems or headaches.

ECT is the application of a small amount of electricity (electro-) to the human brain to generate a brief seizure (convulsive). The procedure (therapy) is done while the person is under general anesthesia and the muscles are relaxed. Most people respond well to ECT. It also tends to work faster than medications – often within the first two weeks of treatment. ECT is especially effective among older people. Many patients and families have described ECT as a lifesaving treatment.

Call 828-213-4696  for more information about ECT or to schedule an appointment with one of our ECT physicians today.
